Unhinged

Tessa was never close with her Aunt Liz. She got along with Aunt Lillian, as she understood her more than her mother, but Aunt Liz sometimes gave her a spine-tingling chill. She can be sweet on the outside, often offering homemade treats or advice, though it’s a mystery as to what she can be on the inside.

“I swear your Aunt Liz will be the death of us!” Tessa’s mother exclaimed. What’s going on?” Tessa asked. Your Aunt Liz is pressuring your father and your uncles to sell your grandparents’ house now that they’re no longer with us,” Tessa’s mother explained. “She’s even calling the other relatives and getting a lawyer. I knew she had ulterior motives when she married your Uncle Jackson.” Confused, Tessa wanted her mother to elaborate, but that might raise more questions than answers. Deciding to go to another source, Tessa texted her cousin Rina to find out the truth.

“I don’t know what to tell you, Tess,” Rina said apologetically. My parents don’t tell me these things, and every time I bring it up, they just say that it’s something for your Dad, my Dad, and Uncle Jackson to deal with.” Tessa sighed. She had hoped that her cousin would offer some insight into whatever their Aunt Liz is up to, but this endeavour has proven to be a dead end.

“Well, we know that Aunt Liz didn’t marry Uncle Jackson for money,” Tessa said. “If she wanted to do that, she would go for some rich billionaire. Or maybe she’s after the bigger fish since there will be a considerable sum once our grandparents’ house is sold to a potential buyer.” Rina nodded in agreement. “I think you may be right,” she said. “Though we don’t exactly have proof. That, and Aunt Liz has a bunch of lawyers on speed dial to hide behind.” Tessa sighed again. “I just feel sorry for Cousin Juliana and Cousin Terry; who wants to have a mother like Aunt Liz?” Rina doesn’t respond, but Tessa knows her cousin agrees. Aunt Liz has become unhinged, and there’s no telling what she is truly capable of.
