Fading Embers

There was a time when her heart would skip a beat at the thought of Nathanael Bennett. His laughter was music to her ears, and she found solace in his embrace. Yet, as the days turned into months and years, something inside her has changed.

Alexandra couldn’t pinpoint the exact moment when their love began to fade. It didn’t happen all at once, but rather, it was a gradual process, like the colours of a sunset blending into the night.

She clung to the remnants of their love like a lifeline, with a sense of duty and familiarity guiding her. Though deep within, she could feel the flickering of the once roaring flames, now reduced to mere embers. Alexandra longed for something more that reignited the spark in her eyes and made her soul come alive. As much as it pained her to admit it, that something wasn’t Nathanael.

She knew she had to be honest with herself and with Nathanael. Alexandra couldn’t continue living a lie, pretending that everything was still how it used to be. She had to plaster a loving smile every time Nathanael took her out on romantic dates and fake passion when they made love, hoping he wouldn’t notice the subtle changes in her behaviour. So, one day, she decided to bite the bullet and invited Nathanael over. She took his hand and led him towards the couch when he arrived. After they were both seated, she uttered the words that had been weighing on her like a stone with a heavy heart and tearful eyes: “I don’t love you anymore.”

It was a painful confession, but it felt like a heavy burden had been lifted. She unshackled herself from the chains of faded love, and though the path ahead was uncertain, Alexandra knew she had made the right choice for both of them. The wounds slowly healed as time passed, and she embraced life again. Alexandra discovered that not loving someone anymore didn’t mean the end of happiness; instead, it was the beginning of a new chapter filled with possibilities and love in its purest form.
